Gotham Greens Brings Local Lettuce To New Yorkers Year Round

Using a giant greenhouse on the roof of a Brooklyn warehouse, Gotham Greens grows a wide variety of lettuce, keeping locavore New Yorkers in low-food-mile lettuce and arugula even when it’s snowing.

There are no doubt a number of hydroponic operations in Brooklyn, but none of them are growing anything New Yorkers can buy at Whole Foods. Viraj Puriand of the Gotham Greens team, on the other hand, built the nation’s first commercial-scale urban hydroponic farm on a rooftop in Greenpoint, where they grow sustainable lettuce and herbs year round.
